The Sea of Treasure: Goldspire Island

I made some islands using the generator in this post while I was finalizing the procedure, so here they are. If they look a little messy, it's because they are.

SymbolNameDetailsLocation
U1The Dread Manatee's LairThe shallow waters that the Dread Manatee spends most of its time around are warm and calm. They are near some small cliffs with several caves in them. The Dread Manatee is known to sleep in these caves and relax in the water when it isn't off hunting above the Yellow Plains.South of Westport
U2The Spire Crawler's LairThis ancient lizard folk fort is made entirely of gold and sits in the center of 4 spires, allowing the spires to act as the corners for 4 walls that surround the fort and connect the spires. Inside the fort lives the Spire Crawler, a massive ape with long, bony fingers and toes that end in sharp points capable of digging into the solid gold of the spires. A group of desert apes from the Gold Dust Desert lives in the fort and appears to worship the Spire Crawler in exchange for the leftovers of the Crawler's meals.Southeast of the Golden Bones
R3The Drowned FortThis ancient lizard folk fort is surrounded by a giant bubble of sea water and inhabited by a court of merfolk that doesn't take kindly to outsiders. The fort appears to have grown out of the sand in a single piece.South-central tip of the Golden Spires
U4Grubber's LairA cave on a cliff on the coast houses Grubber, a gigantic grub that almost never leaves his cave because he has a mass of long, muscular tentacles that circles his mouth. he uses his tentacles to attack any living thing that gets too close to his lair, usually eating whatever he catches.Southeast end of the Golden Spires on the southern coast
C5WestportThis city was built to exploit the most well-protected natural harbor on the island and acts as a crucial stopping point on several trade routes. This city is also where much of the gold mined on the island is brought for processing, making it an important port for exporting goods as well. Gold is very easy to acquire in this city and even the poorest residents are known to own gold jewelry that would be worth quite a bit elsewhere.Western end of the Yellow Plains
N6Lone Spear Tribe VillageThe lizard folk in this village really like spears and even appear to worship a giant spear that has been built in the center of the village.North end of the Golden Spires
N7Golden Eye Tribe VillageLizard folk from this village all have bright gold eyes unlike those of any other group of lizard folk. This tribe sends regular raiding parties into the Golden Caverns for goods and supplies.Northwest of the Easternmost Entrance
M8The Island EntranceThis entrance to the Golden Caverns is hidden under a rocky outcrop on Gold Tooth Island and is very difficult to find. One must navigate a maze of crevices to reach the actual caverns even after locating the correct outcrop to start from.Gold Tooth Island, south of Pick
B9Desert Ape VillageA small, stable population of Desert Apes lives here in a village that looks much like the one near the Desert Portal but without the portal. These apes are much more peaceful than the other ones found around the island and will even provide help to travellers when they can.Southeast of Goneril's Hoard
W10Wexlington's TowerThe wizard Wexlington has built his home here in order to be close to the lair of the Dread Manatee. Wexlington has made the Dread Manatee his primary subject of study and would like to learn everything he can about the unique creature.South of Westport
M11The River EntranceThis entrance is next to a river and is partially flooded. A large group of salt water crocodiles are known to hang out around the entrance.South of the Glowing Forest
T12PickThis town is where gold is extracted from the Golden Spires to be shipped off to Westport for processing and export. The First Empire has an unusually strong presence in this town due to its value. The exceptionally pure gold that can be extracted from the spires is of special interest to everyone in this town and everyone is involved in the mining business in some way. All food and supplies for the miners must be imported as there is no local infrastructure to grow food or create new tools.West shore of Gold Tooth Bay, at the foot of the Golden Spires
M13The Easternmost EntranceThis entrance is essentially an open pit that leads vertically into the Golden Caverns. A permanent encampment has been set up around the entrance by the Golden Eye Tribe in order to use the entrance for themselves.Southeast of the Golden Eye Tribe Village
F14Fort SandhillThis fort sits at the narrowest point of the Stretch in order to keep an eye on the lizard folk and other dangerous denizens of the Northern Stretch. The fort has a secret back entrance that opens to the sea, allowing the garrison to escape if they are overwhelmed. The middle of the Stretch, the narrowest part
R15The Golden BonesThis ancient city was carved out of the Golden Spires but seems to have been taken over by a massive dragon that has since died, leaving its gigantic skeleton resting on top of the city. The strangest part of it all is that the dragon's bones appear to have been turned to gold.Southwest of the central cluster of the Golden Spires
M16The Desert EntranceThis entrance has been fortified with a permanent camp around it from the town of Stalwart. The entrance is a large golden tube that exits the sand at a 45 degree angle and leads down into the Golden Caverns.East of Stalwart
U17Kelp Mass' LairOn a beach that is oddly lacking in birds but has a lot of seaweed resides the Kelp Mass, a massive creature that appears to be a gigantic mass of kelp and seaweed. Those who approach see all of the seaweed in the beach move to a single point to form the Kelp Mass. The Mass is intelligent and is worshipped by the lizard folk of the Long Tooth Tribe to the West, providing the lizard folk with guidance in exchange for their worship and sacrifices. The Kelp Mass generally wants more of the island to fall under its influence.East of the Long Tooth Tribe Village
N18The Missing Finger Tribe VillageAdult lizard folk of this tribe must pass an initiation ritual in which they cut off their left pinky finger before they can be considered full members of the tribe.Southwestern extreme of the Golden Spires
M19The Ape EntranceThis entrance to the Golden Caverns is at the base of a 50-foot tall statue of a Desert Ape made from sandstone. The statue is unlike anything the Desert Apes are known to have built.Northwest of the Desert Ape Portal
N20Long Tooth Tribe VillageThe Long Tooth Tribe is a particularly violent group of lizard folk that is actually somewhat expansionist. Under the influence of the Kelp Mass, their god, they patrol their territory and garrison Reptilewatch while attempting to raid Fort Sandhill every now and then.South of Reptilewatch
O21PurplerockA massive purple rock dominates the local area. Plants that grow at the base of the rock are purple and local animals, themselves purple, seem to find the purple plants irresistible. Any intelligent creature who consumes these purple plants believes they are eating the most delicious food they have ever eaten, although they will turn purple if they continue to eat the purple plants regularly.Northeast of Fort Goldglimmer
N22Glowing Scale Tribe VillageLizard folk of this tribe get most of their food from the Glowing Forest, causing members of this tribe to glow a faint yellow color in the dark.North of the Glowing Forest
R23ReptilewatchThis tall tower made of coral bricks was apparently once a watchtower used by the ancient lizard folk. Today, it is battered and crumbling, although some members of the Long Tooth Tribe still maintain a garrison there.Northern point of the Stretch
R24The Tower StoneThis massive block of sandstone is perfectly rectangular and is 50ftx50ftx200ft. The stone rises 100 feet into the air and the bottom is 100 feet below the ground. The stone is riddled with tunnels and rooms that have been inhabited by all sorts of creatures.South-Central Yellow Plains
O24Desert Ape PortalA massive portal in the middle of the desert surrounded by a small village. The village is inhabited by the desert apes, a group of apes that are covered in sand-colored fur and who appear to eat sand instead of normal food and water. The apes come through the portal in waves and periodically move south in a massive mob to attack the town of Stalwart. Despite being able to build huts of stone and bricks, the apes do not appear capable of speech and it is unknown how they organize themselves.North of Stalwart
R25The Shattered ThroneThe remains of what used to be a massive palace made of obsidian. In the center of it all is an obsidian throne surrounded by massive shards of obsidian. It is believed that the palace will reform if a worthy ruler sits on the throne.Southeast end of the Golden Spires
O26The Stretched SwampThis section of swamp, about 3 acres, appears to be filled with abnormally tall and spindly trees. The animals here are also abnormally tall and spindly.South of Fort Sandhill
F27Fort GoldglimmerThis fort is carved from the side of one of the pillars on the edge of the Golden Spires. The fort is only accessible via ladders and overlooks much of Gold Bay from its vantage point.Southern side of Gold Bay
D28Goneril's HoardGoneril the golden dragon settled at the very top of one of the massive golden spires, digging her den right into the gold of the spire. Goneril likes to collect crowns and over the years she has developed quite the collection. Most of her crowns were bought fairly, but she has been known to kill and steal in pursuit of particularly interesting crowns.Northwestern Golden Spires
T29StalwartStalwart began its life as a base camp for those looking to explore the Desert. As it turns out, there is an entrance to the Golden Caverns due East of Stalwart so it has grown into a bustling staging ground for expeditions into there. Several fortifications built of piles of sand and stone are used to help defend the town from the desert apes which periodically attack from the north.South-central Gold Dust Desert
Z1The Yellow PlainsA huge expanse of grass with not much in it besides giant golden-shelled tortoises. Pretty much all of the points if interest in this region are along the coast. People tend to avoid the interior of the plains but no one is really sure why.Southwest corner of the Golden Spires
Z2The Golden SpiresThe primary geographic features of this island are the massive cylinders of pure gold that appear to grow out of the ground and make up the backbone of the island. The pillars are a very hostile environment where almost nothing can grow because only the tops of the golden pillars get decent sunlight and the sandy ground is shaded and cold most of the day.The center of the island
Z3PurplerockThis wide peninsula is fairly similar in biome to the Yellow Plains except many of the animals are purple and only eat purple plants that grow in the immediate vicinity of the massive purple rock visible from pretty much anywhere on the peninsulaNortheast of the Yellow Plains
Z4Gold Dust DesertThis is the driest area of the island. Here, the sand is mixed with gold dust worn from the Golden Spires, making the soil hostile to most plant life.Northwest end of the Golden Spiresres
Z5Gold Tooth BayThis narrow, deep bay is well protected by Gold Tooth Island, making it an excellent natural harbor.East of the Yellow Plains
Z6The StretchThis low-lying section of the island juts off from the backbone of the Golden Spires and is covered in saltwater mangrove swamps.Northeast part of the island
Z7Gold BayA massive bay that separates the Yellow Plains from Gold Dust Desert. It has several desert islands in it and many sandbars that make crossing the bay by boat difficult.Between the Yellow Plains and Gold Dust Desert
Z8Glowing ForestA large forest populated entirely by trees with glowing leaves and fruits. Eating these fruits causes organisms to glow for several days afterwards. As a result, most of the animals that live in the forest glow.East of Purplerock

Pick

Governor: Seamus Pennywhistle

Sergeant: Mehmed Kaldun

Garrison: 20 squads of 20 marines, each led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Gold Mining

Population: 4,000 gold miners, 1,000 tradesmen and professionals, 400 bureaucrats, 18,000 non-working dependents

Description: One of the fastest-growing towns in the First Empire due to the high quality of gold extracted from the spires, this is the only town on Goldspire island that has been able to last more than a few years before being abandoned due to low productivity. There is a very strong First Empire presence here due to the high value of the town.

Pick has been around for nearly 5 years now and the governor is generally credited with this. Governor Pennywhistle was able to lead the town to long-term productivity by developing a new, more efficient way of organizing and directing the work of the mine. The rapid growth of the town has led some to believe they should expand the harbor and develop the local industries to the point that Pick could be declared a City.

Stalwart

Governor: Abdul Alhambra

Sergeant: Lee Kurosawa

Garrison: 6 squads of 25 marines, each led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Outfitting and Guiding Expeditions to the Golden Caverns and Gold Dust Desert

Population: 500 guides and outfitters (not all present at any given time), 500 tradesmen and professionals, 50 bureaucrats, 2,000 non-working dependents

Description: The fortifications of Stalwart are strongest on the north side of town, hills and ditches in the sand need to be maintained every day while marines man the walls and towers, always ready for a Desert Ape attack. Stalwart has an unusually high presence of marines in order to help defend the town from the ape attacks. This high cost of defense is thought to be worth it due to the large number of valuables and magical artifacts that are brought back with most expeditions into the Golden Caverns. The people here generally seem like they stick around out of spite towards the desert apes, or maybe even the desert itself. Many of the guides working for expedition outfitters were born in the town sometime after its founding 40 years ago or are from some other desert, so it is usually a good idea to have one of them with the group when venturing out into the desert. Most residents have some kind of trauma or PTSD based on previous desert ape attacks.

Westport

Governor: Carolina Flores

Captain of the Guard: Wendy Magnolia

Inspector General: Benjamin Blanco

Garrison: 10 lieutenants overseeing 50 guards each

Population: 53,000

Description: Currently, Westport sits at the crossroads of several important trade routes through the Sea of Treasure while also having control of one of the largest natural harbors in the sea as well. This means that although not much food is able to grow on the island, there is more than enough food being imported to keep everyone fed. The gold trade has been good to the people of Westport and nearly every resident in the city is able to afford a level of material wealth that most in the empire can only ever dream of. When gold is as common as it is on Goldspire Island, it is easy to find gold objects for relatively cheap. The large harbor also frequently hosts First Imperial Navy boats of all kinds, with a small industry built around people taking rowboats out to the navy ships to sell supplies to them on the water rather than needing to actually dock at the port. Overall, the people of Westport are shrewd and always hungry for the next source of revenue. Recently, there has been much interest in the economic opportunities of the as-yet impenetrable Glowing Forest, but until anyone comes back from there alive, no one will really know what’s there.

Geological/Biological History

A few million years ago, some magical force caused several thousand gold cylinders to rise up from the ocean floor. Many of these broke the surface of the sea and many more stayed below the waves. These golden spires acted almost like a coral atoll, trapping sediment and debris around the bases of the spires until an island formed around them. As a result, Goldspire island is relatively flat save for the spires themselves, but with a noticeable gradient where going uphill takes you generally closer to the spires. The prevailing winds in the area come from the Southeast, creating a massive desert on the northwestern end of the island due to the difficult time rainclouds have traveling over the entire length of the golden spires.

The golden spires themselves are not immune to the effects of weathering. Portions of spires that are above the ground are exposed to wind and dust, resulting in a uniformly pockmarked appearance on the surfaces of the spires. The weathering results in a high amount of gold dust being incorporated into the local soils and sands, so while most of the soils have a strong yellow hue. The high gold content is toxic to most plants so there are relatively few species that survive on the island, and those that do survive tend to have the “candelabra” growth form common to plants that grow in soils with high amounts of metal.

The Stretch exists due to the mangroves that populate it. The colony began before the Stretch, but sediment gathered around the trees, allowing them to expand outward, eventually creating the Stretch. Today, the area is a massive mangrove swamp, home to a large variety of fish and semi-aquatic turtles.

The harsh environments produced by the island have caused very few animals to be able to survive here. Many species of turtle are present on the island, most of which have golden shells, and the ones from forested and swampy areas tend to be tall and lanky like giraffes. The glowtrees of the glowing forest fruit throughout the year, providing a useful source of food for the glowing tortoises and birds that call the forest home. Other than turtles, the only residents on the island are a fairly mundane array of birds, the lizard folk, and whatever the settlers have brought along with them, although manatees are known to visit the shallows around the island.

Pretty much all modern industry on the island derives from exploiting the gold that makes up much of the island. The ancient lizard folk left behind the Golden Caverns and many useful artifacts, while the gold that makes up the spires themselves is more pure than most ore processing techniques are able to produce. The yellow plains, gold dust desert, the stretch, and all other parts of the island have soils that are not suitable for food plants due to high metal content, so all food is imported and no plants or animals are grown on the island. While the plains, forests, and swamps of the island support a lot of life, none of it is edible to anyone except the residents of the island who have adapted to high concentrations of gold. Because of this, the first empire colonists have introduced no new species to the island successfully.

The lizard folk, in contrast, have apparently been on the island long enough to adapt to the harsh conditions, being found in some numbers in every biome of the island save for those entirely inhospitable to life. Much of this is due to the apparent ability of the lizard folk to eat nearly anything without negative consequences, but the lizard folk of this island seem to push this ability to its limits. While not technologically advanced, 5,000 years on the island has caused quite a bit of adaptation and innovation that the newcomers could learn from.

The desert apes have been present on the island for quite some time, however they have had little influence, if any, on the ecology of the island as they do not appear to consume any resource other than space. Nonetheless, the apes do threaten some species by being hostile to anything that isn’t one of them inside of their territory, which sometimes encompasses important resources.

Political History

Lizard folk arrived on the island about 5,000 years ago when they first arrived in the Sea of Treasure. They created the Golden Caverns that run through the spires and under much of the island before their regression. The First Imperial Navy began scouting the island about 60 years ago and the First Emperor opened it only ten years later, a record for shortest time between initial surveys and opening in the First Empire. In the 50 years since then, very few people have been able to successfully colonize this harsh landscape. What settlements there are must import all of their food and most of their supplies, leading to a cycle of towns attempting to establish, failing to produce enough to justify the work it takes to keep the towns supplied, and then being abandoned. The settlements that have managed to stick around are full of hardy folk who are no strangers to scarcity.

Recent Events

  • There have been an increasing number of attacks made by the desert apes against Stalwart

  • Gold production in Pick has been increasing every year since it was founded 5 years ago, some believe that the only limit on production is the number of people they have working the mines

  • Reports from Fort Sandhill indicate that there are a lot of concerning things going on in the Stretch, but most people believe these to be paranoia brought on by isolation

  • Last year, a group left Westport with the intention of starting a town in the Glowing Forest, but they have not been heard from since they left

  • Wexlington the wizard has been warning people for several months now that the Dread Manatee is growing restless and may begin to threaten local shipping routes

  • The people of Westport have been somewhat concerned lately that they are not making enough money and have been pressuring the governor to find other industries to open up on the island

  • An explorer in Stalwart claims to have found a source of food that can easily grow in the gold-rich soils of the island, but that he is incapable of removing the seeds from where they are stored in the Golden Caverns, leading many to die attempting to retrieve the seeds
