The Sea of Treasure: The Titan's Ring

I made some islands using the generator in this post while I was finalizing the procedure, so here they are. If they look a little messy, it's because they are.

symbolnamedescriptionlocation
F1Fort ChannelwatchThis fort protects the eastern channel between Hoopshard Island and the main island, allowing boats to safely get into Fingerhole Bay and Splinter.East Hoopshard Island
T2SplinterA town that is split between quarrying and poison purification salt production. about half of the town works in the obsidian and quartz quarries while the other half works in poison purification salt production. the two groups have a bit of a rivalry.Just south of The Gem
N3Tall Palm Tribe VillageThis small lizard folk fishing village is built around the tallest saltwood tree on the island.North of the Octopus Tribe Village
O4The Sickly LightThis area is roughly circular and about a mile wide with a sphere of light in the center. This sphere is only visible within half a mile of it and it casts a pale, sickly light that overpowers the sun during the day and doesn't stop at night, leading to a constant greenish lighting in the area regardless of the time of day. Despite the apparently strong light, no plants grow in this area and no animals can be found. Living things gain one level of exhaustion for every day they are within the area. Living things that die in the area become aberrations and are drawn to the sphere. The immediate area of the sphere usually has several aberrations. Touching the sphere transports the toucher to the plane of madness, where they are immediately killed unless they have some way to handle the effects of pure madness.South of Crashing Wave Tribe Village
M5The Western EntranceA single opening into the megacave that overlooks the ocean. The entrance is a single long tunnel that goes in a straight line for nearly a mile before it connects with any other part of the megacave.West side of the Southern Daughter
N6Crashing Wave Tribe VillageThis lizard folk village is full of exceptionally old lizard folk who claim to have gained immortality through meditation in the crashing waves on the beach.North of the Sickly Light
N7Storm Tribe VillageA tiny lizard folk village known for exceptionally strong buildings that frequently weather huge wind storms without any metal or stone in their construction.North of Fort Seabreeze on the coast.
R8The Great City of ObThis ancient lizard folk city was dedicated to the old lizard folk god of obsidian, Ob. Much of the island is taken up by the ruins which are said to contain all sorts of ancient magic items.Covering much of the Northern Daughter
M9The Tower EntranceThis crumbling coral brick tower does not match the architectural style of any other building in the islands, ancient or otherwise. No one knows when or why this tower was built, but it also happens to sit on top of an entrance to the megacave.North of the Dire Squirrel Den
N10Octopus Tribe VillageA lizard folk village where the primary source of food for the inhabitants is octopus caught from the bay.North of the East Channel Fort
T11BlacksandThis town is very small and has very few resources. Most people who live here farm aromatic herbs for cooking, but there is also an obsidian quarry that hires its fair share of workers. The soil here is not very good for food crops and this side of the island doesn't get much rain, so people are very dependent on supply shipments from the First Empire to survive. On the southwestern end of the West Band Mountains
R12Obsidian Templea large obsidian tower that appears to be carved from a single massive piece of obsidian, rising up over the jungle. It is an old ancient lizard folk temple to Ob, the god of obsidian. The tower is featureless on the outside save for four entryways at each of the the four cardinal directions. Inside, the temple is full of intricate obsidian carvings depicting Ob in mythological stories.West of Saline
U13Dwayne, the Roc's, nestSeveral large saltwood trees have been bent together to support the massive nest of this roc's nest. The roc's name is Dwayne.Due southeast of Saltport
R14Obsidian ShardsA huge mass of obsidian spikes appears to erupt out of the ground. There are so many that the shards form walls and rooms that have the remains of an ancient lizard folk town inside.West Hoopshard Island
N15Dire Squirrel Tribe VillageLizard folk in this tribe are particularly fond of eating other intelligent beings. Every full moon, they take part in a ritualized hunt where they attempt to hunt down, kill, and then eat an intelligent being from outside their tribe.North of Blacksand
C16SaltportThe only city and the only port large enough for cargo ships in the Titan's Ring. Everything that is produced on or extracted from the island must go through here in order to reach the rest of the First Empire. Saltport is also known as a place where one can easily hide from the law if they manage to keep a low profile. The city is also known as a place where one can buy almost any poison known to intelligent beings if they know the right people, in direct opposition to the city's primary export of poison purification salt.Northern end of the main island, just northeast of The Gem
F17Fort SeabreezeA First Empire fort that protects the southeastern corner of the main island. It is made mostly of coral bricks.East of Saline
N18Smoke Tribe VillageThe lizard folk of this tribe spend a lot of effort keeping the massive signal fire in the center of the village burning. This fire puts up a huge plume of smoke at all hours and provides light for the village at night. The villagers partake in a festival every solstice where they gather a ton of psychoactive cactuses and then throw them on the fire to get high on the smoke together.North of The Gem
B19Slime PitA large pit in the ground with tunnels going up and down its walls. The pit and tunnels are filled with all sorts of oozes and slimes. No one knows who put them there, or why, but the assumption has always been that it was done to guard a treasure.East of the Sickly Light
M20The Guarded EntranceThis entrance to the megacave is a huge set of stone doors guarded by two massive stone golems named Sma and Ash. No one knows who created the golems, but the doors will not open until both golems have been destroyed.South of the Slime Pit
B21Dire Squirrel DenThis series of burrows in the dirt is home to the largest pack of dire squirrels in the Titan's Ring. Due to their size, humanoid creatures have a difficult time squeezing through the small tunnels.North of the Dire Squirrel Tribe Village
N22Seagull Tribe VillageThe lizard folk of this tribe are particularly unsophisticated, living in tents on the beach This tribe does have the peculiar habit of building large seagull sculptures out of driftwood, which dot the beach near the village.Southwest point of main island
R23The East Channel FortAn old lizard folk fort made of coral that appears to have naturally grown in the shape of a fort. It is at a strategic point overlooking the east channel between hoopshard Island and the main island.Southernmost point of the Inner Saltwood
U24The Megamoa's LairA rocky outcrop on the beach hides the entrance to a series of lava tubes where the megamoa, a massive, bloodthirsty moa, makes her home with her flock.West of the Dire Squirrel Tribe Village
T25SalineA small town with coral walls and buildings known for being very windy and rainy. Most inhabitants make their living by harvesting salt from the saltwood trees in the surrounding rainforest.Southeastern end of the main island, on the edge of the saltwood
D26Rosencrantz' HordeRosencrantz the dragon is known to have a strong dislike of intelligent creatures and a strong fondness for plants. As such, his horde takes the form of a massive botanical garden and several greenhouses which are said to contain rare plants that can no longer be found anywhere else in the world. Rosencrantz is very protective of his plants and has spent several centuries building up protections around his botanical complex. While the value of a single plant from his collection could make someone a king getting to those plants is a dangerous, difficult process.East side of the Southern Daughter
U27Pulpo's LairA large cave which opens up under water in Fingerhole Bay. Pulpo lives here and is known to spend much of his time lurking within this maze of crevices, tunnels, and atriums. The center of Fingerhole Bay, at the bottom of the bay
M28The Volcano EntranceThis entrance to the megacave is only accessible via a 100 foot climb up a nearly shear rock face.East slope of The Gem
Z1The Titan's DaughtersTwo small islands on the northwestern side of the island. They are known as the Northern and Southern Daughters, respectively. They are hilly, dry, and very similar to the Obsidian Scrub in appearance. The main thing that sets these islands apart from the rest of the ring is that they are considered the territory of the only dragon known to inhabit The Titan's Ring.Northwestern end of the main island, about a mile offshore
Z2Obsidian ScrubThe entire western portion of the main island is taken up by a scrubland. The soil here has a high obsidian content, leading to black and grey soils that can be somewhat hazardous due to the many sharp chunks of obsidian mixed in.West of the West Band Mountains
Z3The GemThe main peak of the shield volcano that formed the islands. It is the highest point of the Titan's Ring and is visible from just about every point on the islands. About half way up, trees stop growing and about three quarters up all vegetation stops.Roughly the center of the West and East Band Mountains
Z4West Band MountainsThese relatively low hills and mountains are essentially the same as the obsidian scrubland but with more elevation. Very few things actually live here due to the lack of water.Southwest of The Gem
Z5Fingerhole BayWhile this large, calm bay would normally by the center of First Empire settlement for the Titan's Ring, a massive octopus named Pulpo lives in the center of the bay, making travel through it somewhat perilous. The middle of the main island
Z6Hoopshard IslandThis small island is the preferred nesting site for massive flocks of seabirds due to the cliffs on the southern side. The island is mostly barren except for a few stunted shrubs and grasses.South of Fingerhole Bay
Z7Inner SaltwoodBetween the Easy Band Mountains and Fingerhole Bay is the Inner Saltwood. Although the plants and animals are the same as those in the Outer Saltwood, the East Band Mountains prevent much of the wind that buffets the Outer Saltwood from reaching the inner jungle, allowing the trees to grow noticably taller than their Outer Saltwood counterparts.West of the East Band Mountains
Z8East Band MountainsThese hills and mountains are mostly covered in saltwood tree jungle. There is not much change in the organisms from the flatter jungles, but the elevation changes in conjunction with the jungle makes exploring and settling this area very difficult.Southeast of The Gem
Z9Outer SaltwoodThis jungle forest gets a lot of salty sea breezes and a lot of rain, leading to healthy but stout trees in comparison to the Inner Saltwood. Most of the trees in the Saltwood are, in fact, Saltwood Trees which have adapted to the salty soils and breezes by coming to depend on high salt concentrations to live.East of the East Band Mountains

Saline

Governor: Lucian Malthus

Sergeant: Peter Fuerte

Garrison: 12 squads of 12 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Poison purifying salt production through the harvesting and processing of saltwood tree sap

Population: 2,000 workers involved in poison purifying salt production, 500 tradesmen and professionals, 50 bureaucrats, 8,000 non-working dependents

Description: Saline is a small town on the coast, nestled between the beach and the southern end of the East Band Mountains. Coral walls surround a town made of mostly palm wood and coral. The Governor's tower is the only building made entirely out of coral bricks and stands taller than any other building in town as well as being in the exact center of it. Each morning at sunrise, the sap harvesters go out into the forest to collect sap and tap new trees. Shortly after, the poison purification salt factories begin their work straining, boiling, drying, and grinding the sap into poison purification salts. Aside from imported foods, people eat locally raised sheep, moa, and rice as well as whatever they can forage from the jungle. Governor Malthus is known as a fair but iron-fisted leader who enforces harsh punishments for the breaking of laws. Despite sometimes draconian punishments, Malthus is interested in maintaining some sense of justice in this frontier town and accepts no corruption among those who work under him. People are generally happy in Saline because crime is low and lizard folk raids are rarely problematic. Weather tends to be wet and windy year-round.

Saline has recently become the epicenter of the resistance against the trade monopoly held by the merchants in Saltport, to the point that the entire town has signed a petition to the First Emperor to have their currently shallow harbor dredged to accommodate large cargo ships like the harbor in Saltport can. This was done with the support of the Governor in hopes of raising the status of his town, but the people did it as part of a wider sentiment of resistance to Saltport merchants. There is a belief that the merchants set their buying prices for poison purification salts artificially low to get better profit margins, and so the people of Saline believe they should be able to sell directly to the shipping companies. There is a lot of uncertainty about what the Emperor’s decision will be as the merchants have more collective power to lobby for their interests in the capital city than the people and governor of Saline.

Splinter

Governor: Anna Morris

Sergeant: Birch Maduro

Garrison: 15 squads of 20 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Split between quarrying and poison purification salt production

Population: 2,000 quarry workers, 2,000 salt workers, 1,000 tradesmen and professionals, 300 bureaucrats, 17,000 non-working dependents

Details: Half of the workers in this town work in the obsidian and quartz quarries, removing blocks of these minerals to be sent off to other parts of the world to be processed into stuff. Being at the base of The Gem, there are many large deposits of both minerals. The other half of the town's labor force works in the poison purification salt industry, working in the jungle to the east. Both groups of workers take a lot of pride in their respective industries and there is a strong rivalry between the two groups. Recently, tensions have risen between the two groups and it does not take much to start a fight if opposing factions are in the same space. The governor takes a pretty hands-off approach and leaves the marines to their own devices so long as her own comfort is not compromised. The sergeant spends most of his time drinking and hates needing to take time out of his schedule to do actual work. The Town has coral brick walls. One half of the town is built from local stone while the other half is made of palm wood from the jungle. Quarry workers live in the stone half and salt workers live in the wood half. Diets in this town tend to rely more on imported goods and hunting due to the relative lack of good farming land compared to other towns in the Titan's Ring.

Blacksand

Governor: Sandra Dark

Sergeant: Samantha Cain

Garrison: 5 squads of 10 marines, each led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Herb Farming

Population: 1,000 farmers, 500 quarry workers, 100 tradesmen and professionals, 30 bureaucrats, 6,000 non-working dependents

Details: While most people in this town make their money by farming the culinary herbs that grow well in the dry climate of the western ring, the small obsidian quarry is growing in size. The herbs that grow well on this side of the island are mostly slow growing perennial herbs with woody stems. This town is relatively poor, although the walls and many of the buildings are built from locally quarried obsidian. The governor is very strict and wants to push people to be as productive as they can be, but a well placed bribe will usually keep the marines from bothering you. Food in this village tends to be very well flavored due to the proximity to the herb fields.

Saltport

Governor: Carly Philohalos

Captain of the Guard: Herb Marston

Inspector General: Marta Gomez

Garrison: 15 lieutenants overseeing 50 guards each

Population: 100,000

Details: Saltport makes most of its money from cargo tariffs, docking fees, and trade taxes. As the only city in the Titan's Ring and the location of the only port large enough for most cargo ships in the First Empire, pretty much any goods that enter it leave the Ring have to go through here, meaning those taxes and fees add up to quite a bit of money. This focus on trade means the city is a hub of merchants and cargo ships as they make their way around the Sea of Treasure. The governor and the guards are known to be fairly relaxed in law enforcement while the inspector general is known to run a very tight ship at the port. Because the laws in the city are not strictly upheld, many people see Saltport as a good place to go if they are on the wrong side of the law in one of the local towns or even settlements on nearby islands. The unique context that this city exists in means that it is also a hub of the poisons trade. If you know who to talk to, it is said that you can find just about any toxic substance you can think of in a back alley market in Saltport.

Geological/Biological History

Several dozen million years ago, a shield volcano began erupting somewhere in the middle of the Sea of Treasure. Over time the lava cooled and built up until an island formed. Although the lava built up slowly, it was high in silicon dioxide and cooled very quickly, meaning much of the island is actually made up of obsidian and quartz. It was completely barren for a few million years until erosion and colonizing plants started to make it habitable. The eastern side of the island has always been the windward side that gets a lot of rain while the western side has always been in the dryer rain shadow of the mountains, so of course the saltwood jungle grew in on the east side and the obsidian scrub on the west side.

These biomes tend to extend up into the hills and mountains until the altitude excludes trees, and then even grasses towards the peak of The Gem. The saltwood trees that are endemic to the Titan's Ring today are the descendents of regular palm trees which have since adapted to be highly tolerant to salt, to the point that they cannot survive without large amounts of salt in the soil. The sap of these trees is incredibly salty, but can be dried and ground up to make a culinary salt that will neutralize poison in food that it is used on. The shrubs and grasses that did better on the dry side did so through a multitude of oils and hairs that have led to a large number of useful culinary herbs in the Obsidian Scrub.

Most of the plant and animal species that live on the islands today arrived randomly from the mainland. They had to be able to either fly or float from the mainland, meaning most animals on the Titan's Ring are birds, but lizards, snakes, insects, and a few rodents made it out there as well. Most immigrants to the islands remained similar to their mainland ancestors, but there are two notable cases of island gigantism. One group of birds evolved into giant herbivores known as moa and one group of rodents evolved into coyote-sized pack hunters known as dire squirrels which feed primarily on the moa.

Animals of all types tend to be black and gray when found in the scrub while their Saltwood counterparts tend to be countershaded browns. Other notable biological specimens include a seagull that hunts prey in flocks, a turtle that eats obsidian gravel that then gets processed and incorporated into the shell, and a squirrel with a glowing tail.

Lizard folk arrived on the ring about 5,000 years ago during the height of their ancient seafaring culture, bringing no organisms with them other than themselves as they never domesticated any plants or animals. The First Empire discovered the island and began colonizing it about 200 years ago, bringing sheep, dogs, cats, rice, and several other domestic animals to the ring. All of these domesticated imports tend to be found only around forts and towns established by the First Empire as the native ecosystems seem to be exceptionally resistant to invasion by everything the First Empire has introduced so far. While imperial domestics do just fine when raised and protected by people, local organisms seem too hostile for any recent transplants to establish a solid population.

Political History

Lizard folk arrived on the ring about 5,000 years ago during the height of their ancient seafaring culture and have been present ever since. The Titan’s Ring was first scouted by humans about 250 years ago when the First Imperial Navy landed on the eastern shore, and the island was officially opened to colonization 200 years ago in the first round of openings. Since then, a few towns and forts have been established by the First Empire. Only one city has developed on the Titan's Ring, Saltport, which has the only port large enough to accommodate large cargo ships in the Titan's Ring. Because of this, pretty much every good produced on or extracted from the islands goes through Saltport before it leaves for other parts of the First Empire. In the last 20 years or so, this relationship between Saltport and the other towns on the island has led to some degree of tension as townsfolk feel the merchants in the cities have too much power.

Recent Events

  • The First Emperor declared Saltport to be the most productive city in the empire last year

  • The Seagull Tribe and the Dire Squirrel Tribe formed an alliance to raid Blacksand together

  • There was a revolt in Saline several months ago over low wages relative to the value of poison purification salt

  • Fort Channelwatch stopped communicating with any other First Empire settlement in the Titan's Ring, but the navy has not sent anyone to investigate

  • People have reported strange lights and horrible monsters out in the Obsidian Scrub

  • There have been sightings of a massive green dragon flying far out on the west of the islands

  • The people of Saline have submitted a petition to the First Emperor requesting that their harbor be dredged to be able to accommodate larger cargo vessels
