Enamel Point
Governor: Dennis Canino
Sergeant: Lynne Hasagawa
Garrison: 5 squads of 12 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant
Primary Industry: Fangbark tree bark harvesting and some processing
Population: 500 workers involved in fangbark harvesting, 100 tradesmen and professionals, 10 bureaucrats, 2,000 non-working dependents
Description: Enamel Point is a small town on the coast of the Upper Teeth, near the back of Maw Bay. Pretty much all of the people in the small town are either directly involved in or work to support the bangbark harvesting industry. The town itself is made primarily of fangbark wood, stripped of the valuable fangs save for the outside surfaces of the town wall where they provide defense. The town is particularly small and unappealing to settlement because it is fairly isolated from the other towns in the Maw. A single group of people who refer to themselves as “Cascadians” have all settled here to escape persecution in their homeland. They all wear flannel shirts that button up in the front as well as knit caps in numerous colors and patterns. The only non-cascadians in the town are the governor, sergeant, marines, and some of the bureaucrats, creating a bit of a tension between the citizens of the town and the people in charge of them.
Much of this tension comes from cultural differences. Most of the non-cascadians are from the more cosmopolitan heartland of the First Empire, while the Cascadians all share a common culture and religion. While they accept the common doctrine of the emperor as the avatar of their god, Buhneyan’s, will in the material plane, they have strange traditions involving telling tales around outdoor fires at night, often accompanied by drums and string instruments, which their leaders look down on. While these tales are often nothing more than myths about Buhneyan and his blue ox companion, Beyb, fighting monsters in the forest, they are derided as childish and crude.
Hyoid Bay
Governor: Kaira Sugimori
Sergeant: Jonathan Tsunami
Garrison: 10 squads of 10 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant
Primary Industry: Fishing
Population: 1,500 workers involved in the fishing industry, 200 tradesmen and professionals, 30 bureaucrats, 5,000 non-working Dependents
Description: This town is built out of roughly hewn volcanic rocks and palm wood, with a wall made of the same rough-hewn rocks and an extensive dock protected by sections of the town’s wall which extend into the ocean. The people of Hyoid Bay are known for being a particularly friendly and welcoming group of people. They seem to enjoy living in the town and going about their daily lives, and no one seems to have any reason to question this. For some reason, the governor believes that the fish and other animals taken from the bay have magical properties that provide vague health benefits to humans that eat them. While almost no one else believes that this is true, the governor has made enough of a commotion to get the attention of the First Empire’s inspectors, who will arrive in the near future. No one is sure how the governor will take it when she learns that her town does not produce magical fish.
Woodport
Governor: Woody Allen
Sergeant: Birch Mapleton
Garrison: 15 squads of 10 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant
Primary Industry: Lumber
Population: 5,000 workers involved in the lumber industry, 1,000 tradesmen and professionals, 100 bureaucrats, 20,000 non-working dependents
Description: Woodport is the largest town of the Dragon’s Maw and produces a large amount of high quality lumber. The large town has grown very quickly and has had to build several new walls to keep the growing town mostly protected from the wilds. The old walls have never been demolished and have instead been incorporated into the buildings around them, leading to the development of several concentric rings of tall wooden buildings built up against the old walls. Many describe Woodport as looking like a massive wooden fortress or castle with buildings used for bricks. Although the town is massive, it also regularly sends out large parties of people to go out and establish lumber camps. These lumber camps can be found all over the Mandible Coast, cutting down the largest trees of the massive forest and bringing them back to Woodport for processing and shipping to other parts of the empire.
The people of Woodport have been wanting to put together an application for cityhood to send to the First Emperor for several years now, but each draft is blocked by the governor for some obscure, legalistic reason. This is because the governor thinks cityhood will loosen his control over one of the most valuable settlements in the Sea of Treasure. Many people in the city are starting to get fed up with the governor’s behavior, however, and he does not realize that he may have large-scale resistance on his hands if he does not change his attitude soon. The sergeant is much more liked and supports cityhood for Woodport, making her a likely candidate for the governorship despite her military background.
Geological/Biological History
The Dragon’s Maw began life as a massive volcano that erupted in the ocean, creating the main island as its initial crater. After the initial eruption, however, the volcano continued to erupt at a much slower and calmer rate, creating the Tongue, the island in roughly the center of Maw Bay. While the old crater has slowly eroded into the mountainous Upper and Lower Teeth, the Tongue is a growing island made of much newer rock. Despite the evidence of a more violent past, most of the basalt rock on the island shows signs of having cooled slowly, a sign of intermittent calm periods as well. These volcanic islands have very rich soils, although not every part gets the needed water to support the dense forests of the eastern side. This is due to the prevailing winds which go from East to West, creating a dramatic rain shadow which drives the western parts of the main island into a full desert.
Over the years, many species of tree have been able to establish themselves and become massive on the southern part of the main island and in the Nasal woods, but the Upper Teeth are dominated by the fangbark trees which are endemic to the Upper Teeth. Fangbark trees are large palm trees, but instead of bark they have scales made of tooth enamel which are shaped into vicious spikes. At some point a group of pelicans settled on the island, eventually becoming the giant flightless pelicans that call the island home. These pelicans exist on the Dragon’s Maw with another bizarre animal, the pygmy camel. While it is unknown how camels could have ever reached the islands, it is clear that their descendents have adapted to the different biomes of the region quite well.
While it is clear that this island was colonized by the ancient lizard folk, like many other islands in the Sea of Treasure, the modern lizard folk tribes of the Maw only live in the Lower Teeth. The islands were fully inhabited by lizard folk 5,000 years ago during the height of their culture, leaving behind many ruins. It is believed that the ancient lizard folk are responsible for the abundance of strange fruits in the Nasal Woods. Due to the fairly recent and extractive colonization by the First Empire, almost nothing new has been introduced to the islands, although there has been a recent decline in the number of trees of all species since the First Empire’s arrival.
Political History
The ancient lizard folk settled on the island about 5,000 years ago and apparently treated the island as a holy place to their goddess of teeth and feasting, Molara. It is assumed this association was made due to the presence of the fangbark trees. First Imperial Navy crews first scouted the island about 70 years ago, and the island was opened to colonization 45 years ago. Since then, the towns on the island have grown relatively quickly, with Woodport becoming big enough to consider cityhood in the near future. The other, smaller towns of the Maw are also growing quickly and could become cities in the near future as well.
Sometime in the last 30 years, several leadership figures on the island have shown some degree of paranoia about supposed mole people invading from the dragon tunnels beneath the island. While most people believe this to be nothing more than paranoia, it is actually true that the mole people are beneath the islands and are plotting an attack on the surface in the future.
