The Sea of Treasure: The Dragon's Maw

This is a standalone version of the island created in the island generator example images in case anyone reads that and wants to use the example.

symbolnamedescriptionlocation
M1The Mountain EntranceThis entrance to the dragon tunnels starts out as a maze of cramped caves full of dangerous creatures before opening up into the larger tunnels deeper below the island.Northwest of the Headwater Tribe Village
N2Leopard Gecko Tribe VillageThe lizard folk of this tribe revere the Leopard Gecko and believe the unique being is the protector god of the Cerebral Desert. Because of this the lizard folk paint themselves yellow with black spots and attempt to emulate the positive qualities of the leopard gecko.Southwest of the Leopard Gecko's Lair
F3Fort NorthfangThis fort is one of two on either side of the entrance to Maw Bay and the marines here are tasked with protecting the entrance in conjunction with their sister fort to the south. The two forts have an intense rivalry which occasionally results in violence.North of Fort Southfang
T4Enamel PointA relatively small town on the coast. Most of the people of this town harvest the bark from the local fangbark trees so that it can be made into armor and jewelery. People here wear lots of knit hats and flannel shirts.Southeast of Fort Westwatch
R5The Fanged CathedralAn ancient lizard folk temple to Molara, the ancient lizard folk goddess of teeth and feasting. The ancient temple complex is made of fangbark bricks and is mostly ruined except for the main sanctuary building, which is almost pristine and is the home of a group of humans who worship the ancient goddess and recieve a mouth full of vicious fangs as a blessing from her.Southeast of the Clamshell Ruins
B6Pygmy Camel Breeding GroundsThis is one of the largest locations on the entire island where the pygmy camels of the Dragon's Maw meet up each year for their courtship rituals. Males fight over harems of females every year during the breeding season.East of the Rear Fang Tribe Village
N7Gumline Valley Tribe VillageThis lizard folk village is close to the headwaters of the Gumline River which runs the distance of the Gumline Valley. These lizard folk are very well adapted to the cycles of the valley and move up and down it with the changes of wet and dry seasons. The village is mostly used during the dry season and has walls of stacked boulders, apparently out of some concrn that mole people will one day attack from the Mountain Entrance nearby.Southeast of the Mountain Entrance
R8The Tongue Tied TowerAn ancient lizard folk tower that appears to be entirely undamaged, except that it appears to hae been tied into a knot in the middle. A lonely demon who loves tongue twisters has been trapped inside the tower since before the decline of the ancient lizard folk.West of the volcano on the Tongue
D9Debbie's HoardIn a large cave network under one of the forrested mountains of the upper teeth is the hoard of Debbie, a very old and fearsome dragon with scales that look like porcelain. The entire cave network is filled with Debbie's hoard of porcelain cat figurines, which she is very proud of and loves to show off to visitors.Northeast of the Fanged Cathedral
T10WoodportA relatively large town that has found prosperity from the lumber trade, exploiting the particularly large trees of the Mandible Coast. Most of the town is built from wood with stone foundations and roads.South of the Gumline Valley Tribe Village
T11Hyoid BayThe people of this town are very friendly and welcoming to newcomers. Most residents are in the fishing industry and have a deep appreciation for the sea and the diversity of goods that comes from it. The governor of the town believes that fish from the area have magical healing properties, although this is not true.West side of the bay on Hyoid Island
W12Patricia's TowerA tall, narrow, crooked tower made of wood which stands above the canopy of the Gumline Valley Forest. Patricia the wizard lives here where she studies the trees of the Lower Teeth and why they lack the magical properties of the fangbark trees of the Upper Teeth.North of the Creeping Carpet
R13The Clamshell RuinsAn ancient lizard folk town of unknown name, constructed entirely of crushed clamshell bricks and mortar. Although the ancient lizard folk that once lived here are long gone, a group of venemous snake people from far outside the First Empire has taken up residence in secret. The snake people will welcome any outsiders but will kill anyone who finds out about them and then tries to leave.Northwest of the Fanged Cathedral
F14Forth SouthfangThis fort is one of two on either side of the entrance to Maw Bay and the marines here are tasked with protecting the entrance in conjunction with their sister fort to the north. The two forts have an intense rivalry which occasionally results in violence.South of Fort Northfang
N15The Gravel Scaled Tribe VillageThe lizard folk of this tribe appear to be covered in a layer of gravel instead of the scales that other lizard folk have. Members of this tribe live in a cave in the mountains and eat rocks to get their proper nutrients.Northeast of Patricia's Tower
R16The Pointed RuinsThe remains of an ancient lizard folk city that appears to be made entirely out of smooth tooth enamel. The buildings of this city are uniformly conical and pointed so that they look like gigantic teeth erupting from the ground, and they are even arranged in a jaw-like horseshoe pattern. Currently, a group of giant flightless pelicans have taken up residence in the old city and they will attak any intruders they come upon.Northeast of the Gumline Valley Tribe Village
B17Giant Octopus NestA rocky outcrop off the coast of the Dragon's Maw which comes close to but does not break the surface of the water. A large group of massive octopi is know to nest here and attack any vessels that get nearby.Northwest of the Clamshell Ruins
U18The Landwhale's LairThis network of massive tunnels and caverns is the whome of the Landwhale, a humpback whale with legs instead of flippers. The Landwhale is a very dangerous animal that will attack anything inside of its territory except for pygmy camels, which it apparently deems harmless. It is unclear what the Landwhale actually eats.Northeast of the Tumbling Boulder Tribe Village
R19Overgrown OrchardWhat used to be an orchard run by the ancient lizard folk is now an overgrown grove of fruit trees of every kind imaginable. After growing wild for thousands of years, most of the fruits have developed strange magical properties that cannot be predicted.North of the Fey Court of the Nasal Woods
N20Falling Rock Tribe VillageThis lizard folk village is on top of a mountain. The residents are fond of rolling boulders down the mountain as a form of self-defense.Northwest of the Rear Fang Tribe Village
U21The Leopard Gecko's LairA rocky hill which is the habitual nap location of a large gecko the size of a leopard with razor-sharp teeth and claws. It hunts the pygmy camels which roam the cerebral desert for most of its food, although it is known to attack people a few times every year.Southwest of the Desert Entrance
O22The Fey Court of the Nasal WoodsA group of several dozen fey have left the Feywild and set up a residence underneath a hill here. The hill is ringed by mushrooms and the court is led by Queen Splareeza, known for her love of parties and toying with mortals. Splareeza and all of the members of her court look like tiny fairies with insect-like wings.Northwest of the Ancient Lizard Folk Mausoleum
N23Rear Fang Tribe VillageThe lizard folk of this village have long sharp fangs in the backs of their mouths that poke out from the sides of their mouths, the size of fangs being used to determine status in the tribe.Southern end of the most western peninsula of the Lower Teeth
R24Ancient Lizard Folk MausoleumA massive mausoleum that is several stories tall, but only the top level and the roof are above ground. Something at the lowest level of the mausoleum is causing the interred lizard folk to rise as violent undead.East of the Forest Entrance
O25The Creeping CarpetThis is a region of the island about 100 feet square that has nothing on it except for a luxurious carpet. The edges have a very nice golden fringe and the carpet is expanding at a rate of about one inch in every direction per year. Trees and plants are killed and integrated in the carpet, and anyone who spends too much time in one spot will find themselves tangled in the carpet's fibers, unable to escape.East of Woodport
B26Giant Flightless Pelican Nesting GroundsA rocky area where a large flock of giant flightless pelicans nests and lives throughout the year. The pelicans will attack pretty much anything that gets close to their nesting grounds.East of the Pointed Ruins
F27Fort WestwatchA large sandstone fort with thick walls near the Desert Entrance. The commander is certain that mole people are going to stage an invasion from inside Dragon Tunnels starting at that point and ensures that there are always men guarding the entrance.Northeast of the Desert Entrance
M28The Forest EntranceThis entrance to the Dragon Tunnels is a relatively small opening in the ground in the center of a circle of fanbark trees. In the opening is a spiral staircase leading downwards into the Dragon Tunnels. At the bottom of the staircase is a mole person military camp.Northwest of Fort Northfang
M29The Desert EntranceThis entrance to the Dragon Tunnels is a large pit in the desert with a small camp of marines from Fort Westwatch guarding it at all times.Southwest of Fort Westwatch
Z1Hyoid IslandA smaller volcanic island with a southern forest and northern scrublands. The volcano has been dormant for a long time but is not extinct. Hyoid Island lacks the giant flightless pelicans and the pygmy camels of the Dragon's Maw proper, but has a great variety of small birds and reptiles.Southwest of the largest island
Z2The Lower TeethThe mountainous peninsulas on the southern half of Maw Bay. The Gumline Valley cuts through the southern parts of much of the Lower Teeth, watering a huge diversity of tree species. These mountains are somewhat taller and steeper than those of the Upper Teeth, making the Gumline River essential for travel in much of the region.North of the Mandible Coast
Z3The Upper TeethThe mountainous peninsulas on the northern half of Maw Bay. These peninsulas are dominated by low mountains and forests of fangbark trees, trees which have bark made of the ame substance as human teeth which growns in pointed scales which curve upward and away from the bark, giving the scales the appearance of fangs. These trees only grow in the Upper Teeth, and nowhere else on the island. Most animals native to the Dragon's Maw are not able to survive in the fangbark forests.East of the Cerebral Desert
Z4Cerebral DesertIn the rain shadow of all of the mountains of the Dragon's Maw, way on the western end of the island, is the Cerebral desert. The cerebral desert is very dry and gets very little precipitation each year. Pygmy camels are particularly successful here and camels rom the reqion tend to have larger humps than those from the rest of the island.Western end of the largest island
Z5Mandible CoastA few flatter sections of the southeast edge of the island which get a lot of rain and have particularly large trees. It is not uncommon to find large lumber camps when wandering the woods.South of the Lower Teeth
Z6North ShoalsA relatively shallow area of ocean off the northwest coast of the Dragon's Maw which has many sand bars and coral reefs. The area is home to giant octopuses and is very treacherous to traverse.North of the Cerebral Desert
Z7The TongueThe island in the center of Maw Bay. The extinct volcano on the island was once the center of the massive volcano that formed the larger island. The entire island is covered in a dense rainforest with many different kinds of tree, much like the Lower Teeth. The center of Maw Bay
Z8The Nasal WoodsThis forest gets a lot of rain and is home to many large trees, although not as much rain or as big trees as on the Mandible Coast. First Empire citizens rarely come out here and the woods have a reputation for having lots of weird things in them.North of the Upper Teeth
Z9Maw BayThe bay that is mostly surrounded by the island. It is relatively shallow although it does not seem to be home to anything particularly dangerous.Between the Upper and Lower Teeth

Enamel Point

Governor: Dennis Canino

Sergeant: Lynne Hasagawa

Garrison: 5 squads of 12 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Fangbark tree bark harvesting and some processing

Population: 500 workers involved in fangbark harvesting, 100 tradesmen and professionals, 10 bureaucrats, 2,000 non-working dependents

Description: Enamel Point is a small town on the coast of the Upper Teeth, near the back of Maw Bay. Pretty much all of the people in the small town are either directly involved in or work to support the bangbark harvesting industry. The town itself is made primarily of fangbark wood, stripped of the valuable fangs save for the outside surfaces of the town wall where they provide defense. The town is particularly small and unappealing to settlement because it is fairly isolated from the other towns in the Maw. A single group of people who refer to themselves as “Cascadians” have all settled here to escape persecution in their homeland. They all wear flannel shirts that button up in the front as well as knit caps in numerous colors and patterns. The only non-cascadians in the town are the governor, sergeant, marines, and some of the bureaucrats, creating a bit of a tension between the citizens of the town and the people in charge of them.

Much of this tension comes from cultural differences. Most of the non-cascadians are from the more cosmopolitan heartland of the First Empire, while the Cascadians all share a common culture and religion. While they accept the common doctrine of the emperor as the avatar of their god, Buhneyan’s, will in the material plane, they have strange traditions involving telling tales around outdoor fires at night, often accompanied by drums and string instruments, which their leaders look down on. While these tales are often nothing more than myths about Buhneyan and his blue ox companion, Beyb, fighting monsters in the forest, they are derided as childish and crude.

Hyoid Bay

Governor: Kaira Sugimori

Sergeant: Jonathan Tsunami

Garrison: 10 squads of 10 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Fishing

Population: 1,500 workers involved in the fishing industry, 200 tradesmen and professionals, 30 bureaucrats, 5,000 non-working Dependents

Description: This town is built out of roughly hewn volcanic rocks and palm wood, with a wall made of the same rough-hewn rocks and an extensive dock protected by sections of the town’s wall which extend into the ocean. The people of Hyoid Bay are known for being a particularly friendly and welcoming group of people. They seem to enjoy living in the town and going about their daily lives, and no one seems to have any reason to question this. For some reason, the governor believes that the fish and other animals taken from the bay have magical properties that provide vague health benefits to humans that eat them. While almost no one else believes that this is true, the governor has made enough of a commotion to get the attention of the First Empire’s inspectors, who will arrive in the near future. No one is sure how the governor will take it when she learns that her town does not produce magical fish.

Woodport

Governor: Woody Allen

Sergeant: Birch Mapleton

Garrison: 15 squads of 10 marines, each squad led by a lieutenant

Primary Industry: Lumber

Population: 5,000 workers involved in the lumber industry, 1,000 tradesmen and professionals, 100 bureaucrats, 20,000 non-working dependents

Description: Woodport is the largest town of the Dragon’s Maw and produces a large amount of high quality lumber. The large town has grown very quickly and has had to build several new walls to keep the growing town mostly protected from the wilds. The old walls have never been demolished and have instead been incorporated into the buildings around them, leading to the development of several concentric rings of tall wooden buildings built up against the old walls. Many describe Woodport as looking like a massive wooden fortress or castle with buildings used for bricks. Although the town is massive, it also regularly sends out large parties of people to go out and establish lumber camps. These lumber camps can be found all over the Mandible Coast, cutting down the largest trees of the massive forest and bringing them back to Woodport for processing and shipping to other parts of the empire.

The people of Woodport have been wanting to put together an application for cityhood to send to the First Emperor for several years now, but each draft is blocked by the governor for some obscure, legalistic reason. This is because the governor thinks cityhood will loosen his control over one of the most valuable settlements in the Sea of Treasure. Many people in the city are starting to get fed up with the governor’s behavior, however, and he does not realize that he may have large-scale resistance on his hands if he does not change his attitude soon. The sergeant is much more liked and supports cityhood for Woodport, making her a likely candidate for the governorship despite her military background.

Geological/Biological History

The Dragon’s Maw began life as a massive volcano that erupted in the ocean, creating the main island as its initial crater. After the initial eruption, however, the volcano continued to erupt at a much slower and calmer rate, creating the Tongue, the island in roughly the center of Maw Bay. While the old crater has slowly eroded into the mountainous Upper and Lower Teeth, the Tongue is a growing island made of much newer rock. Despite the evidence of a more violent past, most of the basalt rock on the island shows signs of having cooled slowly, a sign of intermittent calm periods as well. These volcanic islands have very rich soils, although not every part gets the needed water to support the dense forests of the eastern side. This is due to the prevailing winds which go from East to West, creating a dramatic rain shadow which drives the western parts of the main island into a full desert.

Over the years, many species of tree have been able to establish themselves and become massive on the southern part of the main island and in the Nasal woods, but the Upper Teeth are dominated by the fangbark trees which are endemic to the Upper Teeth. Fangbark trees are large palm trees, but instead of bark they have scales made of tooth enamel which are shaped into vicious spikes. At some point a group of pelicans settled on the island, eventually becoming the giant flightless pelicans that call the island home. These pelicans exist on the Dragon’s Maw with another bizarre animal, the pygmy camel. While it is unknown how camels could have ever reached the islands, it is clear that their descendents have adapted to the different biomes of the region quite well.

While it is clear that this island was colonized by the ancient lizard folk, like many other islands in the Sea of Treasure, the modern lizard folk tribes of the Maw only live in the Lower Teeth. The islands were fully inhabited by lizard folk 5,000 years ago during the height of their culture, leaving behind many ruins. It is believed that the ancient lizard folk are responsible for the abundance of strange fruits in the Nasal Woods. Due to the fairly recent and extractive colonization by the First Empire, almost nothing new has been introduced to the islands, although there has been a recent decline in the number of trees of all species since the First Empire’s arrival.

Political History

The ancient lizard folk settled on the island about 5,000 years ago and apparently treated the island as a holy place to their goddess of teeth and feasting, Molara. It is assumed this association was made due to the presence of the fangbark trees. First Imperial Navy crews first scouted the island about 70 years ago, and the island was opened to colonization 45 years ago. Since then, the towns on the island have grown relatively quickly, with Woodport becoming big enough to consider cityhood in the near future. The other, smaller towns of the Maw are also growing quickly and could become cities in the near future as well.

Sometime in the last 30 years, several leadership figures on the island have shown some degree of paranoia about supposed mole people invading from the dragon tunnels beneath the island. While most people believe this to be nothing more than paranoia, it is actually true that the mole people are beneath the islands and are plotting an attack on the surface in the future.

Recent Events

  • The people of Woodport have started putting together an application for cityhood, although the governor is opposed

  • The commander of Fort Westwatch has been putting in requests for more and more men to garrison with and has been giving very little explanation as to why, leading to the denial of his requests

  • The governor of Hyoid Bay has been making bold claims of the magical properties of the fish his citizens pull from the sea, leading to rumors that an imperial inspector may come to verify these claims

  • The lizard folk of the Gumline Valley Tribe have been much more peaceful and defensive lately, breaking off contact with even the tribes they were allied with

  • The governor of Enamel Point has put a bounty on any information regarding the nature of Debbie the Dragon’s hoard along with proof of whatever claims are being made in the hopes of giving gifts to the dragon to ensure the safety of the town

  • The pygmy camels on the island had a very good year and there are more than have ever been recorded on the island, causing some amount of conflict with all of its residents

  • The commander of Fort Northfang has put a huge bounty on the flag from Fort Southfang as part of their ongoing rivalry
